Nutrition and Cancer
Supporting you through difficult times
A cancer diagnosis changes everything
Being diagnosed with cancer may be deeply shocking news with treatment often starting very immediately and each may come with side effects. Every patient and the therapy received are unique and individual so it is not to say you will have all or perhaps even any of these side effects.
All kinds of therapy like surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation affect you and your nutritional status as they interfere with the body's ability to digest, absorb or properly metabolize nutrients from food. When your body does not get enough essential nutrients and energy, malnutrition occurs.
It is exactly when we are in this situation, that we need to find out everything about our health status so that we understand vital information properly. A diet suited to your specific needs, which forms a sound basis for the impending cancer treatments, is one of these aspects.
Read about Mary's story
Mary is a 52-year-old novel author who lives by the landside. She loves her job, to be out in nature or to be around her friends. Mary has a big family which she enjoys a lot but as well takes a lot of her strength. To regain energy she writes, listens to music, goes for walks or catches up with friends.
After she was diagnosed with cancer, Mary had to change her daily routine. She was no longer able to simply do what she loves and what she was used to. Mary experienced various side effects from the chemotherapy, including nausea and fatigue. She then also noticed an unintentional weight loss due to her decreased appetite and reduced portion sizes.
Mary’s regular diet was therefore insufficient to meet her increased needs for energy and nutrients.
