Spotting the Signs of Malnutrition

Unintentional weight loss can be one of the first signs of malnutrition. Clothes, jewellery or belts becoming looser may indicate that you have lost weight without meaning to.

Malnutrition can develop gradually and is not always easy to recognise. Changes in appetite, eating habits, weight or energy levels may indicate that nutritional intake needs attention.

Who is at increased risk?

You may be at increased risk of malnutrition if you:

  • Have unintentionally lost weight
  • Have a reduced appetite
  • Find it difficult to shop for, prepare or eat meals
  • Have difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Are living with a long-term health condition
  • Are recovering from illness or a hospital stay
  • Live alone and struggle to eat well regularly

You may be at risk of malnutrition if you have:

  • Unintentional weight loss over the past 3 to 6 months
  • Reduced strength or feeling weaker than usual
  • Feeling tired most of the time
  • Low mood
  • Frequent illnesses or infections
