Managing the effects of treatment

Cancer and its treatment can sometimes affect eating and drinking. Side effects such as nausea, loss of appetite, changes in taste, tiredness, pain or a dry mouth can make it more difficult to eat well. Some people may experience unintentional weight loss during treatment.

Maintaining a good nutritional intake can help support weight, strength and everyday activities during treatment. If eating becomes difficult, it is important to seek advice from your healthcare professional.

Changes that may affect nutritional status during cancer and cancer treatment

Cancer and its treatment can affect eating and drinking in different ways. Changes that may have an impact on nutritional intake include:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Changes in taste or smell
  • A sore mouth or throat (mucositis)
  • Pain when chewing or swallowing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Digestive problems, such as constipation or diarrhoea
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Low mood or depression
  • Unintentional weight loss

Stay active and seek support

Cancer and its treatment can sometimes feel overwhelming. Looking after your emotional wellbeing and staying connected with family and friends can be helpful during this time.

Talk to people you trust about how you are feeling. Support from family, friends and healthcare professionals can help you manage the challenges of treatment.

If you are able to, try to stay physically active. Activities such as walking, cycling or gentle exercise can help maintain strength, mobility and overall wellbeing.
